How a Treasurer uses it: analyze big reports or spreadsheets and turn messy notes into clean, finished writing

The cash forecast is still open when the treasurer walks in, and the bank portal already shows a wire that landed a day early. Payroll clears tomorrow. A bond payment sits on the calendar. A division in another currency just asked whether it can draw the revolver or whether the parent will fund it from surplus cash. The treasurer is the person who decides which of those moves is allowed, which one waits, and which one needs the chief financial officer or the board before anyone calls the bank. The controller reports what already happened. The treasurer decides how money will be available when the next obligation comes due.

That seat looks different in a public company, a private manufacturer, a hospital system, a university, and a city hall, but the core is the same. Someone has to know the cash, the credit lines, the covenants, the investments of money that is not needed this week, and the story those facts tell a lender or a rating conversation. People who want the title should picture judgment under a deadline, not a vague hope of "working with finance." The tools are bank platforms, a treasury workstation or a disciplined spreadsheet, debt agreements, an investment policy, and a phone list of bankers who will actually pick up.

Cash, risk, and the signature

A corporate treasurer starts most mornings with a cash position: what is in each bank, what will clear, what is trapped in a foreign account, and what is already promised. Forecasting is the job underneath that snapshot. Receipts from customers, payments to suppliers, tax dates, debt service, and capital spending all have to land on one timeline the chief financial officer can trust. When the forecast is wrong, the company either borrows money it did not need or scrambles for cash it assumed would be there. The treasurer owns that error even when a division caused it.

Banking relationships are a second full job. The treasurer chooses operating banks, negotiates the revolver, watches unused capacity, and keeps the documents current when the company acquires a subsidiary or sells one. Letters of credit, commercial paper, and equipment financing may sit on the same desk. Covenant tracking is quieter and just as serious. A missed ratio can tighten the loan or hand the lender rights the board never meant to give away. The person in the seat reads the agreement, not a summary someone else underlined.

Surplus cash has to be invested inside a written policy: safety, access, and then yield. A treasurer who chases return outside that policy is gambling with payroll. Companies that buy and sell in more than one currency also need a plain approach to foreign-exchange exposure, usually laid out with the board so a hedge is a decision and not a surprise. Insurance renewals, sometimes pension funding, and the occasional conversation with a rating analyst round out the larger seats. In a smaller company the same person may still close the books two days a month. The title stretches. The responsibility for liquidity does not shrink.

Public-sector and nonprofit treasurers live in a related but distinct world. A municipal treasurer handles taxpayer receipts, bond proceeds, and an investment policy written for public money. A university or hospital treasurer balances operating cash with restricted gifts and debt issued for buildings. The audience is a council, a board committee, or donors, rather than equity investors. The habit that transfers is the same: write the position so a skeptical reader can see the cash, the obligations, and the limit on what may be done with either.

CPA, CTP, and the licence that is local

No single government licence is required in every state before a person may hold the title of treasurer. A city charter or a corporate bylaw may still name the office and describe who appoints it. Employers often expect a credential even when the statute is silent. The two that come up most often are a certified public accountant licence and a treasury credential, sometimes alongside a law degree, a master of business administration, or the chartered financial analyst designation.

A certified public accountant licence is granted by a state board of accountancy. It proves the holder met that board's education, examination, and experience conditions and may do the attest work that state reserves for licensees. People prepare with an accounting degree, the experience the board names, and study fitted around a real job. In treasury, the licence signals that the person can sit with the controller and the outside auditor without translating every sentence. It does not, by itself, prove the person has managed a revolver or a cash pool. The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy is the practical first stop for finding the board that would actually grant the licence.

The Certified Treasury Professional credential is granted by the Association for Financial Professionals. It is built for people who already work in cash, debt, and risk, and it tells an employer that the holder has shown competence in that practice. Preparation is time in a treasury seat plus study aimed at the topics the association publishes for candidates. A chartered financial analyst charter, granted by CFA Institute, is a broader investment credential. Some treasurers hold it because the portfolio of surplus cash, or a later move toward a chief investment role, makes the charter relevant. None of these credentials replaces the judgment a board is hiring. They make the judgment easier to trust.

What to put on the resume

Name the credential, the body that granted it, and the state if a licence is involved. If the CPA path is underway, say which board and that the work experience is in progress. A treasurer search reads "CPA, New Jersey board" differently from "CPA candidate." The CTP belongs on the same line as the treasury deals, not buried under a list of software.

How a board fills the chair

Larger companies hire treasurers through the chief financial officer and, often, a search firm. The brief is specific: cash forecasting the board already relies on, a debt deal closed, a banking group renegotiated, a covenant scare handled without drama. The interview is a working session. Someone will ask what you would do if the forecast drops by a large amount on a Thursday and payroll is Friday. The strong answer separates what you can decide alone, what you escalate, and which bank you call first. A vague speech about being strategic ends the meeting.

Mid-size companies hire more directly. The controller or the chief financial officer wants a person who can build the forecast, talk to two or three banks, and still help with a close. A resume that only lists "responsible for treasury" loses to one that names the size of the revolver, the number of bank accounts rationalized, and a policy the board adopted. Government and nonprofit searches follow a posting. Read the charter language. If the role is custodian of public funds, say so in the application with the investment policy you have actually administered.

References matter more here than in many finance jobs because bankers and auditors have watched the work. A candidate who can offer a lender, an audit partner, and a former chief financial officer is easier to hire than one who offers only peers. Discretion still applies. You do not hand over confidential deal terms in the first conversation. You do describe your own decisions and the result in figures the listener can follow.

Analyst, assistant, treasurer, then sometimes chief

The common path starts in accounting, financial planning, or a bank credit group, then moves to treasury analyst. Analysts build the cash forecast, reconcile bank activity, prepare borrowing-base certificates, and support the people who talk to lenders. Assistant treasurer is the step where the outside world learns your name. You lead a refinancing, run a request for proposals among banks, or present the investment report to the committee. Treasurer is the step where the recommendation and the signature are yours, subject to the board on the largest moves.

Some treasurers become chief financial officers. That move asks for a wider brief: reporting, planning, and the story told to a board, not only liquidity. Others stay in treasury and deepen a specialty such as capital markets, global cash management, or insurance. A smaller company may title the first finance leader "treasurer" when the real work is still bookkeeping plus a bank account. Read the duties before you celebrate the title. A larger company may title a strong specialist "assistant treasurer" and pay more than the treasurer of a firm a fraction of the size. Title and scope have to be read together.

What stalls a career is a forecast nobody believes, a covenant discovered after it breaks, or a style that hides bad news until the chief financial officer hears it from the bank. What moves a career is a written position, a calm escalation, and a record of deals that closed on the terms you described in advance. Collect that record as you go: the policy, the term sheet with confidential numbers removed, and a short note on what you decided.

May 2025 figures inside one series

These wages are Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for May 2025. This is the one place the broader label belongs: Financial Managers. Treasurer pay is read from that series, which also covers other senior finance leaders, so the dollars describe a wider group than people who only run cash and debt.

Early-career pay in the release sits at $94,310. The national midpoint is $166,570. The distance from that early figure to the midpoint is $72,260. A treasury analyst stepping toward assistant treasurer can use $94,310 as the lower reference and ask where an offer sits against $166,570, especially if the seat already includes bank negotiations and board materials. An offer parked on the early figure while the duties match a full treasurer brief is a mismatch the candidate can name with the source attached.

New York holds both the high end of the published range and the highest median, and those are different statistics. The high end in New York is $370,780. The New York median is $219,880. The high end marks the top of the published range. The median marks the middle of pay in the state. Quoting $370,780 as if it were ordinary New York pay will end a serious conversation. Quoting $219,880 against a current package near the national midpoint is a coherent case. From the national midpoint to the New York high end is $204,210. From the national midpoint to the New York median is $53,310.

State medians, in this order, are New York at $219,880, Massachusetts at $206,760, New Jersey at $199,110, the District of Columbia at $188,880, and Virginia at $185,220. Each of those is a median, the middle, and none of them is the New York high end. Massachusetts at $206,760 still trails New York's median and sits far under New York's high end. New Jersey at $199,110, the District of Columbia at $188,880, and Virginia at $185,220 are all above the national midpoint of $166,570. A candidate comparing two offers should set each offer beside its own median.

The lowest median in the release is Puerto Rico at $90,660. The gap between that median and New York's median is $129,220. That gap compares two medians. It leaves the New York high end of $370,780 as a separate fact. An offer in Puerto Rico should be read against $90,660. An offer in Virginia should be read against $185,220. An offer in New York should say whether the number on the table is the median of $219,880 or the high end of $370,780 before anyone treats them as interchangeable.

Talking about an offer without blurring the figures

Match the figure to the season of the career. A first treasury-analyst offer can sit near $94,310 and still be honest if the work is forecasting support rather than signature authority. An assistant treasurer who already leads bank talks has a reason to look toward $166,570 and then toward the median of the state where the job actually sits. A chief-financial-officer-track treasurer in New York may discuss $219,880 as the state middle. Only a record that truly sits at the top of what the release published should mention $370,780, and even then it should be labeled the high end of the range.

Geography is a real part of the ask. Moving from a package near $166,570 to Massachusetts means the relevant middle is $206,760. Moving to New Jersey means $199,110. Moving to the District of Columbia means $188,880. Moving to Virginia means $185,220. The $53,310 stretch from the national midpoint to New York's median is the raise implied by "typical New York" if you are currently at the national middle. It is a different conversation from the $204,210 stretch up to the high end. Say which conversation you are in.

Bring one page, not a speech. Line up the offer, the national midpoint, and the state median. If the employer cites cost of living, return to the published median rather than inventing a private index. If the employer cites the New York high end as a reason you are already well paid, point out that $370,780 and $219,880 measure different things. Then stop. The treasurer who can keep two statistics apart in a pay talk is demonstrating the same care the board wants on a covenant.

A treasurer at the top of the range of this range can prove where a return came from and defend every figure presented to an investor or a regulator; one in the middle can only produce the figure.

The visible part of the role is decision making — selecting investment mixes, directing the execution of trades, meeting investors to establish goals, monitoring individual holdings against risk targets. The part almost everyone skips is measurement: whether the performance statistics, product risks and fees you present are reconstructible from source, and whether the research behind a valuation would survive a regulatory inquiry. That work has become cheap to do properly. A reconciliation and attribution pipeline in Alteryx software, statistical checks in IBM SPSS Statistics, and a model that reads a rule change and lists what it touches turn a month of manual checking into a scheduled routine nobody has to be asked to run.

Your playbook, by where you are now

Just startingReconcile before you recommend

  1. Rebuild one reported performance figure from source transactions and find every place the two disagree.
  2. Write down the data quality checks you had to invent to do it, and turn them into a repeatable step.
  3. Learn the fee and expense mechanics thoroughly, because that is what an investor challenges first and what a regulator tests hardest.
  4. Automate the recurring extract in Alteryx software rather than rebuilding a Microsoft Excel workbook every reporting cycle.
  5. Read a full regulatory inquiry response your firm has already filed, and note what evidence was required to support each claim.

What proves it: A documented reconciliation between reported performance and source records, with the checks written down.

Realistic span: the first three years

A few years inOwn attribution and the risk report

  1. Build attribution that says which decisions produced the return, not merely that the return occurred.
  2. Track each holding against the portfolio's stated risk goals on a schedule, and raise breaches before a committee finds them.
  3. Use ChatGPT to summarise a tax or regulatory change into an impact list across funds, then verify each item against the rule text yourself.
  4. Turn the investor reporting pack into a version with a stated source for every number, and defend it in a client meeting.
  5. Publish research on a company or sector to a standard that would survive external review, then circulate it internally.

What proves it: An attribution and risk framework in production use, sourced line by line.

Realistic span: years four through nine

ExperiencedBe the person the regulator hears from

  1. Take responsibility for regulatory inquiries and for the evidence file behind them, since that is where senior trust is earned.
  2. Chair the review that decides whether new products, fees or mandates go ahead, using your own measurement work as the basis.
  3. Set the firm's standard for how performance, risk and fees are disclosed to investors, and hold others to it.
  4. Bring investor meetings into your own remit rather than presenting behind a relationship manager.
  5. Consider New York, the highest paying state for financial management, and a chief executive track if you want the whole enterprise rather than the portfolio.

What proves it: Named ownership of regulatory response and disclosure standards across funds.

Realistic span: year ten and beyond

The next 90 days

Choose one number you present regularly — a fund's stated return, a fee ratio, a risk measure — and spend the next ninety days proving it from source. Pull the transactions, rebuild it independently, and document every discrepancy and every assumption you had to make. Most of the time you will find small gaps and one that matters. Write the checking steps into something that runs each cycle rather than living in your head. Then take the finding to whoever signs the investor reporting. Treasurers who bring a quantified data quality problem and the fix for it are handed the measurement mandate, and the measurement mandate is what makes someone hard to replace in this job.

Never used AI before? Start here (2 minutes).

Start in the tool you already live in: Excel. If your company has Microsoft 365 Copilot, turn it on in Excel and ask it to build a rolling 13-week cash forecast from your data, or to explain a variance. It writes the formulas and the summary; you check every number against the source. That is the lowest-friction way to feel the lift.

For analysis, policy drafts, and board narratives, keep Claude or ChatGPT open in a second tab (never paste account numbers or non-public financials). If your company runs a modern treasury platform — Kyriba, GTreasury, Trovata, HighRadius — learn its AI cash-forecasting features; that is where treasury-grade AI lives. You own every figure and decision; AI is the fast analyst who drafts and models.

The one rule, forever: Never move money, execute a hedge, or report a cash position on an AI-generated number you haven't reconciled to the source — bank data, the TMS, the general ledger. AI forecasts and summaries can be wrong or stale, and a treasury error moves real cash. And never paste bank credentials, account numbers, or non-public financials into a consumer AI tool; use bank-grade, vetted treasury systems and enterprise AI with a data agreement.
The plays — exact steps, exact prompts

Do these in order. Each one is copy-paste ready. You do not need to know anything about AI going in.

1
Sharpen cash forecasting with machine learning
Why this pays: Accurate cash forecasting is the treasurer's core deliverable and the basis for every liquidity and investment decision. AI-driven forecasting cuts forecast error — freeing cash to invest and avoiding costly surprises — the value that makes a treasurer a strategic partner.
TrovataKyribaHighRadiusTesorio
1
Feed clean historical cash-flow data into an AI forecasting platform (Trovata, HighRadius, Kyriba) and compare its forecast to your manual one, reconciling every difference.
2
Design the forecast structure with this prompt.
Copy-paste this prompt
Act as a treasury analyst. Help me design a rolling [13-week] cash forecast. My inflows and outflows include: [receivables, payroll, AP, debt service, taxes]. For each category, recommend the best forecasting method (trend, driver-based, or seasonal), the data I need, how to model timing uncertainty, and how to track forecast accuracy (variance analysis) so it improves over time. Note where machine-learning forecasting adds the most value versus a rules-based approach.
AI forecasts are only as good as the data — reconcile the model's cash figures to your bank and TMS balances, and always track forecast-versus-actual variance.
What you'll haveA more accurate cash forecast that frees working capital and avoids surprises — the core deliverable that turns a treasurer into a strategic partner and moves comp toward $370,780.
2
Automate cash positioning and bank reconciliation
Why this pays: Daily cash positioning and reconciliation eat hours of manual work. Automating them with AI and TMS features frees the treasurer for the strategic decisions that actually move value — and reduces the errors that cause overdrafts or idle cash.
KyribaGTreasuryHighRadiusMicrosoft Copilot
1
Use your TMS's automation and AI transaction matching to pull balances, categorize activity, and reconcile — reviewing exceptions rather than every line.
2
Design the workflow with this prompt.
Copy-paste this prompt
Act as a treasury operations expert. I want to streamline daily cash positioning across [8 bank accounts in 3 currencies]. Design an efficient workflow: how to aggregate balances, categorize transactions, identify the day's net position, flag anything needing action (shortfalls, idle cash to sweep), and the controls to keep it accurate. List what to automate versus keep as a human review step.
Automate the matching, but keep human review on exceptions and any movement of funds — controls and segregation of duties still apply.
What you'll haveHours of daily reconciliation reclaimed with fewer errors — the operational efficiency that frees a treasurer for the high-value strategy work the top of the band is paid for.
3
Model FX and interest-rate risk and hedging scenarios
Why this pays: Managing financial risk — currency and rate exposure — protects earnings and is core to senior treasury. AI models scenarios and hedging strategies fast, letting the treasurer make sharper, better-documented risk decisions that safeguard the P&L.
ClaudeChatGPTBloomberg TerminalKyriba
1
Use AI to structure the exposure analysis and stress-test hedging scenarios, then validate the numbers and confirm strategy with your bank and advisors.
2

Act as a corporate treasury risk manager. We have [EUR revenue and USD costs, with EUR/USD exposure of about X per quarter]. Explain our transaction and translation FX risk in plain terms, lay out the main hedging instruments (forwards, options, natural hedging) with the pros, cons, and rough cost of each, and model what happens to our exposure under a [10%] EUR move with and without a [forward hedge]. Flag the hedge-accounting and policy considerations.
Use AI to structure and stress-test the analysis — but validate the hedge mechanics and accounting with your bank and auditors before executing anything.
What you'll haveSharper, well-documented FX and rate risk decisions that protect earnings — the risk stewardship that defines a senior treasurer and carries senior-treasurer pay.
4
Draft board reports, treasury policy, and covenant compliance
Why this pays: Treasurers produce a steady stream of board materials, policies, and lender-covenant reporting. AI drafts them fast from your data, so you spend time on the analysis and the message, not the formatting — the executive communication that builds CFO trust.
ClaudeChatGPTMicrosoft CopilotPower BI
1
Draft the report or policy from your numbers and notes with AI, then verify every figure and tailor the message before it goes up.
2
Draft a board liquidity update with this prompt.
Copy-paste this prompt
Act as a treasurer preparing a board liquidity update. From these figures: [paste cash position, forecast, debt maturities, covenant headroom, key risks], write a concise 1-page narrative for the board: current liquidity and runway, the cash-flow outlook, financing and covenant status, key risks and what we're doing about them, and any decision needed from the board. Clear and confident, minimal jargon.
You own every number and claim in a board document — reconcile each figure to source and remove anything you can't stand behind before it goes to the board.
What you'll haveBoard-ready reports and policies produced in a fraction of the time — the crisp executive communication that builds the CFO trust behind top-of-band treasury pay.
5
Build treasury models in Excel with an AI copilot
Why this pays: Debt schedules, liquidity models, investment laddering — the treasurer's analytical workhorses live in spreadsheets. AI writes the formulas and finds the errors, so you build better models faster and answer the CFO's what-ifs on the spot.
Microsoft 365 Copilot (Excel)ChatGPTClaude
1
Use Excel Copilot (or paste model structures into ChatGPT/Claude) to build and audit models, verifying the logic against a case where you already know the answer.
2
Build a debt model with this prompt.

Act as a financial modeling expert. Help me build a [debt schedule and covenant model] in Excel for [term loans and a revolver totaling $X]. I need: an amortization schedule, interest expense by period, a revolver draw/repay mechanic tied to a cash sweep, and covenant calculations (leverage, interest coverage) with headroom flags. Give me the formulas cell by cell, explain the logic, and tell me the common mistakes to check for.
Test any AI-built model against a known-answer case before trusting it on real numbers — a wrong formula in a treasury model can misstate covenant headroom.
What you'll haveBetter treasury models built faster, with the CFO's what-ifs answered on the spot — the analytical horsepower that marks a treasurer worth the top of the band.
6
Lead treasury transformation and partner with the CFO
Why this pays: The treasurer who modernizes the function — automating operations, adding AI forecasting, elevating reporting — becomes a strategic partner to the CFO rather than a back-office operator. That shift is what carries comp to the top of the band.
KyribaTrovataClaudePower BI
1
Build the business case for treasury modernization and lead the rollout, using AI to draft the plan and quantify the benefit in the CFO's terms.
2
Draft the business case with this prompt.

Act as a treasury transformation advisor. Help me build a business case to modernize our treasury function. Current state: [manual forecasting in Excel, X bank portals, limited visibility]. Cover: the highest-value improvements (AI cash forecasting, TMS automation, better reporting), the expected benefits (forecast accuracy, hours saved, working-capital improvement, risk reduction), a phased roadmap, and the risks to manage. Audience: the CFO.
Quantify the benefit in the CFO's terms — freed-up cash, reduced borrowing cost, hours saved — and pilot before committing to a large platform spend.
What you'll haveA modernized treasury and a seat as the CFO's strategic partner — the elevation from operator to advisor that carries a treasurer's comp to $370,780.

Treasurer work is specific enough that a stamped 'check out these courses' block would be noise. BLS files this work as Financial Managers (SOC 11-3031). What Treasurers earn by state

These are the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ own figures for Financial Managers, state by state — not a cost-of-living adjustment applied to the national number. Only states employing at least 500 people in the occupation are shown, because a state median drawn from a handful of workers is noise rather than a signal.

Frequently asked
Will AI replace treasurers?
No — it automates the mechanics. AI forecasts cash and drafts reports, but deciding how to fund the business, manage risk, and steward liquidity — and being accountable for the company's money — is human. AI frees the treasurer to be strategic; it does not carry fiduciary responsibility.
Can I trust an AI cash forecast?
As an input to verify, not a number to bank on. AI forecasts are only as good as the data and can be confidently wrong. Reconcile every figure to your bank and TMS, and always track forecast-versus-actual variance so you know exactly how much to trust it.
Is it safe to use AI in treasury?
Only with strict boundaries. Never paste bank credentials, account numbers, or non-public financials into consumer tools. Use bank-grade, vetted treasury platforms and enterprise AI with a data agreement, and keep controls and segregation of duties on anything that moves money.
How does AI actually raise a treasurer's pay?
By turning the treasurer into a strategic partner. Sharper cash forecasting frees working capital, better risk modeling protects earnings, and automation frees time for financing and liquidity strategy. That elevation from operator to CFO partner is what moves comp toward the top of the band.
Which AI tool should a treasurer learn first?
Microsoft Copilot in Excel, since spreadsheets are where treasury analysis lives, plus your treasury platform's AI cash-forecasting features (Kyriba, Trovata, HighRadius) if you have them. Add Claude or ChatGPT for reports and policy. Start with whatever touches your daily cash and forecasting work.
