Wages — U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025 (Cooks, Fast Food). Entry is the national 10th percentile. The top chip is the national 90th percentile, not a state. The middle half of workers earns $27,260 to $37,260. Hourly equivalents: $10.86, $14.85, and $20.63. O*NET places this occupation in Job Zone 1–2. The zone note says the work usually requires a high school diploma or GED, though some occupations in the zone may not. That is a zone description, not a counted survey percent and not a license. The marker on the exposure bar is PayCrunch editorial context, not a BLS statistic. Updated 22 September 2026.

Cook a short menu on a timer, drop the next batch before the holding bin runs out, and throw out food that has passed the hold time.

A short menu on a timer is its own occupation

Cooks, fast food are SOC 35-2011. BLS counted 641,070 wage-and-salary workers in May 2025. The locked chips are entry $22,580, median $30,890, and a national 90th percentile of $42,910. Hourly equivalents are $10.86, $14.85, and $20.63. The middle half earns $27,260 to $37,260. From the median to the national 90th percentile is $12,020. That gap is still this job. It is not a state top, and this page does not publish one.

This is not the counter. Fast food and counter workers are SOC 35-3023, median $31,200, on the fast-food-worker page. The two medians sit close. The work does not. Counter work takes the order and the money. This occupation cooks a limited menu: drop, fry, grill, assemble the few items the store's build card allows, and hold them only as long as the hold label says. O*NET describes the duties as preparation of a few basic items. A restaurant line cook, SOC 35-2014, median $37,390 on the line-cook page, is a different board.

O*NET's 2024–2034 category for 35-2011.00 is decline, minus 1 percent or lower, with about 82,100 projected openings a year. Openings are not the OEWS headcount. Decline plus a large opening number means people leave. It does not mean the fryer runs itself, and it does not mean a store will pay the 90th percentile because a worker used a chatbot.

The 2026 station is a kitchen display plus a paper hold chart

Many stores in 2026 fire orders from a kitchen display: Toast, Xenial, PAR, or the chain's own screen. The screen tells you an order exists. It does not replace the cook time printed on the store's card. If the card says a product cooks for a stated time, you start that timer when the product goes in and you pull when the timer ends. Color is a check, not a substitute, when the card gives a time. A model that says "it looks done" is not on the card.

Holding is the other half of the job. Every product the store holds should have a time on the label or on the chart above the bin. When the time passes, the product comes out. You do not mix the old batch into the new batch to "save" it. You do not extend the hold because the window is busy. A full bin of old food makes the window look staffed and makes the next complaint certain. Write the waste as a count of that product. A week of those counts, pasted into a spreadsheet with Copilot or totaled by hand, is how you talk to a shift lead about the par. The chatbot does not stand at the bin.

The drop trigger is a level the store already chose: a number of pieces, a line on the bin, a time of day. Start the next drop at that trigger, not when the bin is empty and the window is already calling the item down. If the screen and the bin disagree, trust the bin you can see and tell the lead. Do not invent a trigger because lunch "usually" spikes. Usual is not today's count.

Build only the card

A build card lists the components in order. Follow that order. An extra slice, a sauce the card does not name, or a swap you think the guest would like is a different product. The guest who ordered the card's product, and the food-cost sheet the manager runs, both assume the card. If a component is out, say so. Do not silently substitute. The front of house can offer the guest a choice. You cannot offer it from the grill without a word.

Allergen and "no" requests arrive as buttons the point of sale already defined. Cook the version those buttons name. Do not paste a loyalty number or a guest name into a general assistant to interpret the request. The request is already short. If two buttons conflict, stop and ask the person who took the order. Speed that resolves the conflict by guessing is how a limited menu still produces a bad tray.

Cleaning between products is the store's chart, not a creative sanitation plan. Which sanitizer, which test strip, which time: the chart. A search result that names a different concentration is not your new standard. If you use a general assistant, paste the chart and ask it to turn the steps into a closing list. Delete any chemical strength it adds.

What the better shift actually changes

Inside this national range, the shift a manager will staff again has three visible traits. The hold labels are current. The waste sheet names products, not "some chicken." The down-items are called before the guest hears them from a screen that still shows them available. None of those traits is a certification this page can sell you. They are the reason a store keeps a cook on the station that feeds the window.

Moving toward the food-service-supervisor occupation, SOC 35-1012, median $44,080, means you can run the station and say who should drop next, using the store's triggers. It does not mean you skip the timer. Supervisors who cannot point at a hold label do not stay supervisors. If you want the line-cook occupation instead, the evidence is different: you can work from a ticket that is not a picture button, and you can cook more than the limited menu. Say which job you are practicing. This page's chips will not follow you there.

Keep a four-week note that a lead can read in a minute. Columns: product, times you ran out, times you discarded for hold, and one sentence on why if you saw it. Do not write a cause you did not see. "Bin empty at 12:10, drop had not started" is a fact. "The company understaffs" is an argument. Facts change pars. Arguments do not change the OEWS median.

Use the tools the store already allows. A headset or the display for down-items. The store's timer, not a phone timer you hide if the rules forbid phones on the line. A spreadsheet on your own time for the waste counts, with no guest data in it. A general assistant to reorder a build card you pasted into steps a new cook can follow. If the draft adds a sauce, a time, or a wage, delete the draft. The wage figures that govern this page are the three chips above. If any sentence conflicts with them, the chips win.

Locked wage chips on this page: entry $22,580, median $30,890, national 90th percentile $42,910. SOC 35-2011. Employment 641,070. If a sentence disagrees with those three wage figures, the figures win.

How to do the work that sits inside this pay band

These steps stay inside the published national range. They are not a promise that you will be paid the 90th percentile.

1
Drop to the timer on the card

A batch you pull early is a quality miss.

1
Start the timer the card names.
2
Pull when it ends.
3
Do not guess from the color alone if the card gives a time.
Prompt
List the cook times on this card. Do not add a time I did not paste.
What changesThe bin matches the card.
2
Throw out food that has passed the hold

A full bin of old product is not a save.

1
Read the hold label.
2
Discard when the time has passed.
3
Start a new batch instead of mixing old and new.
Prompt
Mark which of these hold labels are past the time I paste. Do not invent a grace period.
What changesThe window is serving the current batch.
3
Call the next drop before the bin is empty

The window waits when the drop starts too late.

1
Watch the bin level the store uses as the trigger.
2
Start the next drop at that level.
3
Tell the front when a product is down.
Prompt
Given this bin count and this trigger, say whether to drop. Do not change the trigger.
What changesThe front is not announcing a product that is still in the fryer.

Paste only facts you already have: a count, a time, a step, a file name. If the draft adds a number, a policy, or a product you did not provide, delete it.

Do not paste customer names, loyalty account numbers, or card data. A product name and a hold time from the store sheet are enough.
