Wages — U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, OEWS, May 2025 (Sales Representatives of Services, Except Advertising, Insurance, Financial Services, and Travel). Entry is the national 10th percentile. The top chip is the national 90th percentile, not a state. The middle half of workers earns $47,670 to $100,480. Hourly equivalents: $18.26, $33.65, and $71.56. O*NET respondents most often said a bachelor's degree is required (72 percent). That is an employer survey, not a license. The marker on the exposure bar is PayCrunch editorial context, not a BLS statistic. Updated 22 September 2026.

Sales representative: the scope, the term, and the price you were given

Sales representatives of services, except advertising, insurance, financial services, and travel, are SOC 41-3091. The locked chips are entry $37,980, median $69,990, and a national 90th percentile of $148,840. Those are BLS OEWS May 2025 figures. This page does not print a state median. The wholesale page on this site is SOC 41-4012, a different occupation with a different median. Retail selling is a different page again. The work here is a service sold to a business: what is in the scope, how long it lasts, and the price your company authorized.

From the median $69,990 to the national 90th percentile $148,840 is a wide published range. That spread is not a quota and not a commission plan. This page does not invent a commission rate. The tools that belong in the workflow are Microsoft Copilot inside the company tenant and ChatGPT only on a scope that has been stripped of customer names if your security team has not approved a tenant. A draft that adds a discount you were not given is not a draft you can send.

Write the three lines before the proposal exists

After a discovery call, write three blocks in your own notes: the service the buyer asked for, the term in months or the milestone, and the price on the rate card you are allowed to use. Include exclusions you already know, such as travel, after-hours support, or a second site. Then ask Copilot or ChatGPT to lay those blocks into a proposal skeleton with headings and nothing else. Score the skeleton on three failures. A fee you did not type. A service-level promise you did not type. A competitor's price. Any one of those means you throw the draft away and you do not "just tweak" the discount line, because the discount line is how a rep creates a contract the company did not approve.

The recap email is a smaller version of the same rule. It lists what you heard and asks the buyer to correct it. It does not apologize for a price you have not offered and it does not promise a start date operations has not confirmed. Have the model produce that recap from your bullets. If it adds enthusiasm that changes the commercial terms ("we can certainly include onboarding at no cost"), delete the sentence. The reps who move from the entry chip toward the median, and the ones who reach the national 90th, are the ones whose proposals match the statement of work the delivery team later has to perform. A model that makes the email warmer while quietly widening the scope is a commission problem and a delivery problem.

Discount authority is a name, not a mood. Write the largest discount you are allowed to offer without a second signature, and the name of the person who can go past it. Keep that sentence in the note next to the rate card. When a buyer asks for more, the model may draft the email that requests the second signature. It may not grant the discount in the proposal while the request is still unanswered. Send the internal ask first. Paste the approval back into the price block only after it exists. A proposal that leaves your outbox with a price you hoped would be approved is a contract problem, and it is how a services rep on SOC 41-3091 gives away the spread between the median and the 90th percentile before the work starts.

The handoff the delivery team can perform

A signed proposal that delivery cannot perform is a discount you already gave, plus a project that will be renegotiated in month two. Before you send the skeleton, sit with the person who will do the work, even for ten minutes, and read the exclusions out loud. Write what they refused. The model does not attend that meeting. After it, paste only the refusals into the exclusion block and regenerate the skeleton. If the new draft softens "no after-hours support" into "support as needed," you are looking at the failure mode that costs the 90th percentile: scope that grew in the adjectives.

When you lose, write a lost-deal note with four fields you actually know: the price you offered, the term you offered, the competitor name the buyer said out loud if they said one, and the reason they gave. Leave the competitor blank when they did not say it. A model may file that note in your CRM comment format. It may not diagnose the loss as "we were too expensive" when you did not write that, and it may not invent a competitor so the CRM looks researched. Your manager can coach a blank. A manager cannot coach a fictional loss reason, and finance cannot forecast from one. The national 90th percentile on this page, $148,840, belongs to books that survive delivery. It is not a prize for the smoothest first email.

The forecast is your stages, not a pep talk

Export the opportunities you own with stage, amount you entered, and close date you entered. Ask the model to list rows where the amount is blank, the close date is in the past, or the stage and the next step disagree with a next step you typed. It may not raise an amount, pull a deal forward, or mark a stage "commit" because the quarter is thin. Your manager can audit that list. A chatbot forecast that sounds confident is how a pipeline review lies.

Call recordings, if your company already records them inside an approved tool, stay in that tool. Do not paste a transcript full of a buyer's pricing and employee names into a personal chat so you can "get coaching." You can paste your own de-identified notes. Seat price for Copilot is not SOC 41-3091, and this page does not print one. What you can take to a pay conversation is a folder of proposals that match the rate card, recaps the buyer corrected, and a forecast with blanks still blank. That folder is how the published gap between $69,990 and $148,840 becomes a book you can explain, rather than a number you hope the plan pays.

Proposal skeleton from my three blocks

I will paste the service the buyer asked for, the term, the price I am authorized to use, and the exclusions I already know. Lay them under headings. Do not add a discount, a free onboarding line, a service level, a start date, or a competitor price. If a price is missing, leave the blank and say so. Do not make the language more urgent.

Recap the buyer can correct

I will paste my notes from the call, with the company name shortened if I choose. Draft a recap that lists what I heard and asks them to correct it. Do not offer a concession. Do not promise a date I did not write. Do not add a sentence that changes scope. If I pasted a personal phone number or a private employee complaint, stop.

Forecast rows that are unfinished

I will paste stage, amount, close date, and next step for my opportunities, with account names removed. List rows with a blank amount, a close date in the past, or a next step that does not match the stage. Do not change any amount. Do not tell me what I will close. Do not write a motivational forecast narrative.

Run the first prompt before the proposal leaves your draft folder. Run the second the hour after the call, while your notes still match what was said. Run the third the day before pipeline review, and fix the rows yourself. Advertising, insurance, financial-services, and travel sales are outside this SOC on purpose. So is wholesale. Do not borrow their medians. This URL prints $37,980, $69,990, and a national 90th of $148,840 for SOC 41-3091, and the action that belongs here is a price you were given, still the price on the page the buyer signs.

How to do the work that sits inside this pay band

These steps stay inside the published national range. They are not a promise that you will be paid the 90th percentile.

1
Write the scope before the price

A price without a scope gets discounted later.

1
List the service the buyer asked for.
2
Mark anything you have not confirmed.
3
Put a price on the page only if you already have that price.
Prompt
Turn this call note into a scope list. Leave price blank where I did not provide a number.
What changesThe proposal matches the conversation.
2
Answer the credit question from the sheet

A guessed term becomes the contract.

1
Read the term the company already published.
2
Say when you do not know.
3
Send the question to the person who owns credit.
Prompt
List the questions I should ask before I quote a credit term. Do not invent a term I did not paste.
What changesYou stop promising a term the sheet does not have.
3
Close the loop after the signing

The job is not over when the form is signed.

1
Record what was signed.
2
Name the open question.
3
Set the next date you actually have.
Prompt
Rewrite this follow-up so the buyer can see what was agreed and what is still open. Do not add a concession I did not paste.
What changesThe account has a next step, not a silent inbox.
