The Best-Paying Job in Every State

48 of the 50 states and the District of Columbia are the best-paying state for at least one of the 769 US occupations that have a state answer. California leads 193 of them, New York 95 and Washington 60. The 3 that lead none are Montana, Nebraska and Vermont.

Wage estimates: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025. “Best-paying state” means the highest annual 90th-percentile wage among states employing at least 500 people in that occupation; the counts and medians on this page are PayCrunch aggregations of those estimates.

Occupation by occupation, one state pays more at the top of the range than any other. Turned around, that gives every state a list of the jobs it pays more for than anywhere else in the country. This page is that list, for all 48 jurisdictions that have one, computed from the 824 detailed occupations in the Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS release of May 2025.

One row per jurisdiction that is the best-paying state for at least one occupation. “Occupations it tops” counts the occupations where this state has the highest 90th-percentile wage of any state employing at least 500 people in that occupation.

The states that lead nothing

48 of the 50 states and the District of Columbia are the best-paying state for at least one occupation. The 3 that are not are Montana, Nebraska and Vermont. That is a measure of employment as much as of pay: with a 500-person floor per occupation, a small state clears the floor in fewer occupations and so has fewer chances to come first. It is not a finding that pay there is low.

17 jurisdictions lead 10 or more occupations and 5 lead exactly one. A single win can still be a large number: Wisconsin’s only leading occupation is surgeons, all other, at a 90th-percentile wage of $802,110.

How much the best state adds

For the median occupation, the best-paying state’s top of range sits 24% above the national top of range. For 369 of the 769 occupations with a state answer it is 25% or more.

PayCrunch (2026). The Best-Paying Job in Every State. Aggregated from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025. https://paycrunch.co/stats/best-paying-job-in-every-state.html (accessed 10 October 2026).

Ready to paste for the lead figure on this page:

48 of the 50 states and the District of Columbia are the best-paying state for at least one of 769 US occupations; California leads 193 of them (PayCrunch calculation from BLS OEWS May 2025).

For any other figure, name the occupation and the release and credit the Bureau of Labor Statistics as well as PayCrunch: the wage estimates are theirs, and the aggregation is ours. Figures on this page were last recomputed on 10 October 2026 from the May 2025 release.

Method

Source

Every wage figure on this page comes from the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release of May 2025, published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. No figure here is a PayCrunch estimate. What PayCrunch contributes is the aggregation: the counts, medians, means and rankings across occupations are computed from that release and are labelled as PayCrunch calculations wherever they appear.

What the three figures mean

Entry is the annual 10th percentile wage for the occupation nationally. Median is the 50th percentile. Top of range is the annual 90th percentile — the wage level below which 90 percent of the estimated wage distribution for that occupation falls. None of the three is a maximum, a promise, or a statement about any individual.

The state figures

Where a state is named as best-paying, it is the state with the highest annual 90th-percentile wage among states that OEWS reports employing at least 500 people in that occupation. That employment floor is PayCrunch's rule, not the BLS's; it exists because unfiltered state estimates are frequently drawn from very small samples. The best-paying states dataset documents the floor in full and publishes the unfiltered answer alongside the filtered one for every occupation.

Rebuilding these numbers

The script that computes every figure on this page is .github/stats-engine/build_stats.py in the PayCrunch repository. It reads two files, /data/open/best-paying-states.json and the occupation page dataset, and regenerates all eight statistics pages. Nothing on this page is typed by hand.

The state-by-state view is a transposition of the occupation-by-occupation one: the source file names a best-paying state per occupation, and this page groups those rows by state. No wage on this page is calculated by PayCrunch; the counts, the medians across a state’s occupations and the premium percentages are.

Limitations

  • OEWS is a survey. Every figure carries sampling error, and the error is largest where the occupation is smallest. BLS publishes relative standard errors alongside the estimates.
  • These are occupational aggregates, not worker aggregates. Statistics here summarise the 824 occupation-level estimates, giving each occupation equal weight. They are not employment-weighted, so they do not describe the average American worker and should not be quoted as if they did.
  • The 90th percentile is not a maximum. It is a point on a wage distribution. Pay above it exists.
  • No cost-of-living adjustment. All figures are nominal annual wages.
  • Wage and salary employment only. OEWS excludes the self-employed, so occupations with many independent workers are under-covered.
  • SOC titles are classification labels, not job titles as employers use them, and one SOC code can cover several distinct jobs.
  • One release only. These are May 2025 figures; OEWS releases are not straightforwardly comparable across years.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best-paying job in my state?▼
Find your state in the first table. The third column is the occupation for which your state reports the highest 90th-percentile wage of any state in the country, and the fourth is that wage. It is not the highest-paying job in your state in absolute terms; it is the job your state pays more for than anywhere else.
Why do Montana, Nebraska and Vermont not appear?▼
They are not the best-paying state for any occupation under a 500-employee floor. A smaller state clears that floor in fewer occupations, so it has fewer chances to come first. It says nothing about pay levels there.
What does the 500-employee floor do?▼
It drops state estimates built on very small samples, which otherwise win on noise. The floor changes which state comes first for 389 of the 824 occupations in the release. The unfiltered answer is published alongside the filtered one in the open dataset.
Is the 90th percentile the same as the average?▼
No. The 90th percentile is the wage below which 90 per cent of workers in that occupation and state earn; it describes the top of the published range, not the middle. The median is in the full table at the foot of this page.
Can I republish this table?▼
Yes, with attribution to PayCrunch and to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The underlying file is published as open data at /best-paying-states.html under CC BY 4.0, and the same figures are queryable through the PayCrunch API.
